Is CBD in the News for the Right Reasons: Why is the Food Industry Talking Extensively About Hemp?

The CBD market is very well-known in nations like the US, Canada, and Australia. Since 2021, product launches in categories like tea (300% increase in launches) and carbonated soft drinks (150% increase in launches), energy drinks, beer, chocolate tablets, and gummies have been the most frequent. There have been fewer product launches this year, and the majority of them fell under the supplement category. These products include de-stress gummies, memory aids, psychedelic supplements, focus gaming supplements, and products for both daytime and nighttime stress. Companies like Medterra launched mood boost gummies infused with saffron, L-Tyrosine, 50 mg CBD, and 5 mg THC.

Regionally speaking, while products containing CBD increased by roughly 300% in Latin America and North America in 2024 compared to 2021, there was a decrease in regions like Europe and MENA. However, due to regulatory concerns in the US, the discussion about incorporating hemp into food products has heated up in recent weeks.

California shocked the nation by imposing an immediate ban on hemp-containing products. After that, a bill was passed in New Jersey that limited the use of hemp in products and prohibited its sale to anyone younger than 21. Legislation in Kentucky, however, has emerged in support of hemp producers and businesses, expressing their wish to safeguard the sector during the unexpected upheaval. All of this occurred as a result of the government’s lack of regulations regarding hemp and product specifications. The same thing occurred in the personal care sector, where ECHA requested product submissions in order to review formulations and ultimately develop regulations pertaining to the CBD sector.

Businesses involved in the hemp industry are unhappy with the government’s rash decisions and are requesting some respite by postponing the prohibition or gaining a better understanding of the circumstances.

The market was divided when Coca-Cola declared its interest in beverages infused with cannabis. However, it might be challenging for industry titans like Coca-Cola to enter this market given the current regulatory environment. Nonetheless, it would be accurate to state that the market for food and drink options infused with cannabis is significant. The current problems in the US may slow down the rapid growth of CBD, particularly in the nutrition sector, but they may also increase consumer interest in trying these products.
